NEW YORK–Proving once again that it is capable of meeting any challenge, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) announced today that it will hold its championship series as scheduled, beginning this Sunday in Minneapolis, despite the current government shutdown.
“We know that a lot of people may have been distracted (from the upcoming finals) by the shutdown,” said WNBA Communications Director Dina Skokos, “but we’ve played through public indifference, near empty arenas, homophobia, poor television coverage, and fiscal instability since our inception in 1996, so (the government shutdown) is just another obstacle we have to take in stride.”
Minneapolis Lynx star Maya Moore said she will prepare for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Dream just as she would if the government was still functioning.
“I’ll iron my uniform, study film, and play the drums a little to relax, like I usually do, then I’ll catch a bus down to the arena,” said the former UCONN standout.
Ms. Moore said she doesn’t even plan to think about the government shutdown until after the finals are concluded.
“That will be soon enough because (WNBA) players aren’t eligible for SNAP until two weeks after the season’s officially over.”
