Demonstrators March in Rally for Immigrants’ Rights

MEXICO CITY – Nearly three dozen illegal American immigrants took to the street in Mexico City yesterday to protest what they called “exploitation” at the hands of the Mexican government.

Humming Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and waving tiny Mexican and American flags, the well-dressed demonstrators said they deserve better treatment under the law because they’re living in places most Mexicans can’t afford to.

“With the U.S. dollar worth 11.05 pesos,” said illegal American immigrant Baxter Clarke, “we’re much better able to support upscale shops and fine restaurants than the average Mexican worker is. What’s more, we’re not taking jobs away from anyone because we live on retirement incomes or inherited wealth.”

Mr. Clarke, a retired insurance executive from Des Monies, argues that he and the members of his grass roots organization, Anglos for Assimilation in Regional Policy (AARP), provide jobs for local residents, sparing them a long and dangerous trip to work for substandard wages in a country whose people don’t want them.

“Why should a peasant living in a mud hut on the outskirts of Mexico City risk the trip to the United States,” asked Mr. Clarke, “when he can find work right here washing our cars or doing our laundry or mowing our lawns for the same wage—and live like a king?”

Cindy Jones, another member of AARP, says she believes Americans who have been living illegally in Mexico for more than three years should be granted full citizenship.

“Unlike American tourists who come here, spend a boatload of pesos, and go home, we’re pouring pesos into the economy year round,” said Ms. Jones. “Yet we’re often overcharged because legally we’re no different from tourists. That’s not fair to us.”

Mexico’s president, Vincente Fox, said he felt little sympathy for illegal American immigrants living in his country.

“If they want the benefits of Mexican citizenship, let them apply for it—and let them learn to speak Spanish—or else go back where they came from,” Mr. Fox declared.
