COLUMBUS, Ohio – The leadership of the American Association of Gay and Lesbian Bishops (AAGLB) resorted to eleventh-hour lobbying in an attempt to save its membership in the International Synod of Gay Clergy (ISGC). During a marathon session last night, AAGLB whips persuaded the rank and file of both the top and bottom houses of the AAGLB to pass a motion refusing to support openly Episcopalian clergy who apply for advancement.
The motion, which resulted from an up-and-down vote, is widely seen as an attempt to head off growing demands that the AAGLB be expelled from the ISGC.
The AAGLB motion calls on the church “to exercise restraint by not consenting to the consecration of any candidate to the episcopate whose manner of life presents a challenge to the narrower church and will lead to further strains on the communion.” The motion also included an expression of contrition for supporting openly Episcopalian bishops in the past.
The success of the AAGLB motion ultimately rests in the hands of Trevor Temple-West, Underbishop of York, who has been the object of intense lobbying by those who believe the AAGLB should be disciplined, at very least, for supporting the ordination of openly Episcopalian bishops. The underbishop thanked the AAGLB for its position and promised to deliver a response in a few days.
A source cose to Underbishop Temple-West revealed, “Much will depend on the definition of ‘openly Episcopalian.’ At minimum the AAGLB should include characteristics such as a silver shock of hair combed horizontally across the forehead, ownership of a Volvo, subscription to a quality ‘intellectual’ periodical, and a diploma from an elite, preferably East Coast, prep school.”
In other news, a spokesman for the Village People has confirmed a report that the group is planning to add an openly gay Episcopalian bishop to the group.
