HOLLYWOOD – Jennifer Aniston told Vanity Fair that she “desperately” wants to have a baby. Aniston, 36, who became a godmother in April, said she was so moved by the experience that she began to lactate halfway through the ceremony, ruining an expensive Victoria’s Secret bra and nearly fouling a $4,000 dress from Halston’s Christian Couture line.
“If that doesn’t tell me I need to be a mother, I don’t know what does,” laughed Aniston. “It’s a lucky thing I had a spare bra in my purse.”
Aniston was named godmother to her Friends co-star Courteney Cox Arquette’s daughter Coco at a ceremony held in Birmingham, Alabama. At the reception following the event, Aniston quipped, “Always a godmother, never a mother. That sucks. I’ve got to get me one of those little accessories.”
Aniston is known for her offbeat sense of humor, but friends say she is serious about having a baby, and that has some of them worried. According to the Hindustan Times—which cited “a New York Daily News quote from ‘an insider talking on condition of anonymity’ to a US magazine,”—publicity about the alleged affair between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is “killing” Aniston. She is also reported to be worried that younger, pregnant stars like Britney Spears will leverage their condition into greater media exposure.
“All that plays into Jennifer’s worst fears—that she isn’t pretty enough, smart enough, young enough, or sexy enough or that she doesn’t have the right nose to have a baby,” said the anonymous friend. “She has a cigarette in her mouth constantly, and since Brad left she’s lost about six pounds, which is nearly 15 percent of her body weight.”
Although some people fear that Aniston’s desire to have a baby is a sign of her destabilizing mental condition, others disagree.
“As usual, the press has blown this all out of context,” said Cox Arquette. “Jen doesn’t plan to actually have the baby herself. She’s far too busy with her career. Once she gets pregnant, she’s going to have the embryo transferred to a surrogate mother, who will bear the child. Does that sound like an idea hatched by a mentally unstable person to you?”
In related news, Elton John ruefully denied yesterday that he is getting married because his main squeeze David Furnish is in a family way.
“I wish it were true,” said Sir Elton, who managed to add “but try as we might” before he broke down sobbing.
