LOS ANGELES – Film star Jessica Alba demanded that Playboy magazine pull its March issue and insert nude photos of her or else face a lawsuit. The actress, who appears on Playboy‘s cover but not inside the magazine, said on Thursday that Playboy‘s editors had misled her “legions of fans” into thinking they would see her naked inside.
“My client doesn’t want people to pay a lot of money for a magazine that doesn’t deliver what it promises,” said Ms. Alba’s attorney, Meyer Wolfstein. Mr. Wolfstein sent Playboy a letter threatening to sue if it did not remove the Marsh issue—which features a publicity photo of the bikini-clad actress on the front—from news stands. He warned that Playboy will be liable for “damages to Ms. Alba’s reputation and career” unless it inserts nude photos of her inside the magazine.
“Playboy has damaged my personal integrity and blatantly misled the public,” said Ms. Alba, 24, in a statement. “People might think I had insisted the magazine put me only on the cover because I was ashamed of my body or something. I want people to see that I’ve got nothing to hide.”
Lauren Malone, a Playboy spokeswoman, said Ms. Alba was selected for the cover after being chosen “sexiest star of the year” by the magazine’s readers. Ms. Malone noted that it was not ususual for celebrities to appear on the cover of Playboy, but not in the nude inside.
“Claudia Schiffer, Paris Hilton, Goldie Hawn, Raquel Welch, Barbra Streisand, Brooke Shields, and Donald Trump have all appeared on the magazine’s cover without appearing nude inside,” said Ms. Malone. “If Ms. Alba wants exposure in our magazine, she’ll just have to submit sample photos for Mr. Hefner’s approval like everyone else does. We can’t make an exception for her just because she’s a celebrity.”
