Paula Abdul Joins Live 8 Clean Nail Crusade

LOS ANGELES – American Idol judge Paula Abdul has agreed to co-host the Live 8 broadcast from Philadelphia this weekend. Although Abdul had originally declined to participate in Live 8 because of “a pre-existing vacation commitment,” the former dancer decided to get involved when she learned that nail salons in Africa are not governed by health regulations.

“I simply could not stand by and do nothing when I realized that poor people in the nation of Africa were exposed to bacteria and infections every time they got their nails done,” said Abdul. “I, too, have been victimized by substandard hygiene, and I want to lend a hand in making nail infections history.”

Abdul’s epiphany occurred when she suffered a debilitating fungal infection after having her nails done in Los Angeles last year. She claims the infection was “the direct result of negligence” on the part of the Pretty Me nail salon and meditation center in L.A. According to Abdul, the Pretty Me nail technicians failed to clean their instruments properly, which caused Abdul a year-long struggle against thumb-sickness.

“Being a professional entertainer, I’m no stranger to pain,” said Abdul, “and I’ve been told my tolerance for pain is impressive. But this [pain] was so excruciating I had to take anti-pain medication and sleep with my hand outside the covers for almost a year. Even so, the least contact with my thumb in personal-hygiene situations caused me to scream in pain, which was a source of considerable embarrassment in public restrooms.”

The Live 8 appearance in Philadelphia is part of Abdul’s campaign to reform nail salons. On Monday she and her thumb appeared before California lawmakers and urged them to crack down on nail salon hygiene. The former Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader, who enjoyed a brief singing career in the 1980s, told lawmakers “the time has come to take a stand on real issues that affect real people.”

In related news, Corey Clark, who has accused Abdul and her thumb of seducing him, was cited for misdemeanor battery after throwing breakfast plates at his record company manager, Laura Kathleen Troy, who criticized his performance of the night before.
