President Bush Unpopular Even Among Illegal Immigrants

LOS ANGELES – The immigration debate, which has divided the Republican party, has divided illegal immigrants, too, with a slight majority of them believing President George W. Bush should be allowed to remain in the White House even though he “sneaked in through the back door.”

By a six-to-five margin, illegal immigrants interviewed at rallies around the nation in May said the president had earned the right to keep his job.

“So what if he stole two elections instead of getting the job honestly?” said migrant farm worker Hector Ruiz (not his real name).

“He’s doing work that other Americans don’t want to do. John Kerry didn’t want the job or he wouldn’t have run such a dumb campaign, and Al Gore didn’t want the job so much that he was ready to concede the election before all the votes in Florida were counted.

“Besides,” added Mr. Ruiz, “building a wall around the White House isn’t going to keep anyone from sneaking in who really wants to be there.”

Although Mr. Ruiz voiced the slight majority opinion, there were many illegal immigrants who complained that President Bush wanted all the perks of office—health care, a limousine, and food assistance—despite the fact that he had obtained his job illegally.

“He thinks stuff ought to be handed to him just because he’s lived in the White House for nearly six years,” said Luis Romero (not his real name), a janitor at a Greyhound bus center in Los Angeles.

“That’s not fair to other people who obtained their jobs illegally. If we can’t have those things, the president shouldn’t have them either; and if we’re expected to learn English, why shouldn’t the president have to learn it too?”
