Terrell Owens Suspended by Monday Night Football

NEW YORK – Monday Night Football has suspended Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens indefinitely for conduct detrimental to its commercials. Owens, who appeared in an infamous skit with Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan preceding an MNF telecast last November, was scheduled to appear in a follow-up to that controversial advert this year. The sequel was to going to be used as the lead-in to the Eagles-Dallas Cowboys game on Monday November 14.

Although Owens is contractually obligated to MNF to appear in the second commercial, he was a no-show at script-reading sessions in August. He explained his absence by telling ESPN, “I just want them to pay me what I’m worth. I carried Nicollette in that commercial last year, and I want to be paid accordingly.”

When MNF refused to renegotiate Owens’ contract, he grudgingly showed up for filming rehearsals in September wearing a camouflage sweat shirt instead of his Eagles uniform. He refused to speak to reporters, and when Sherican made repeated attempts to speak to him, he ignored her, too.

“I don’t have to talk to [her],” said Owens to ESPN. “As long as she bring the booty, I’ll be there to catch her when she drops that towel. Ain’t no reason why I’ve got to talk to her otherwise.”

In addition to refusing to speak to his costar, Owens suggested that she was the reason the commercial had run over budget last year.

“Let’s just say she was a little out of breath a couple of times,” said Owens. “She done that before while we was rehearsing.”

Despite Owens’ behavior, MNF continued filming the follow-up commercial and was prepared to use it, but then Owens was asked to comment on a remark made by Joan Rivers to ESPN’s Graham Bensinger. Rivers told Bensinger that if Paris Hilton had appeared in the commercial instead of Sheridan, the production could have been brought in under budget.

“Yeah, I can see that,” Owens told Bensinger. “Paris is a lot younger than Nicollette, and she doesn’t choke on the big scenes, you know. With the knowledge she brings to the video position and all, and with her not requiring as much time in make up, I can see where that would be true.”

When MNF executives heard that remark, they pulled the commercial and suspended Owens indefinitely.
